BFI Luminous (2015)

We're hosting a fundraiser for Unicef UK to mark Tom Hiddleston's birthday. If you are able, please donate! Also, we have prizes!!! The fundraiser closes on February 10, 2019.

October 6, 2015:

Tom Hiddleston was named as the founding Ambassador for the British Film Institute (BFI). In his role Tom will help raise awareness for the BFI's cultural charity, film education, film preservation, and initiatives to build the next generation of film talent.

“Film is an art form – one of the most powerful, accessible, democratic and transformative in our society. It allows us to see the world around us, and the lives of others. It plays a vital role in establishing our national identity and gives us confidence as a nation. The BFI looks after the most significant collection of film and television in the world. It should be treasured and protected, in the same way we treasure and protect all our great cultural collections, from art and music, to libraries and museums. The BFI’s mission is to ensure that our film culture is kept alive, and to inspire the next generation of film talent. It’s the reason the BFI exists and why I am committed to being a BFI Ambassador.” - Tom Hiddleston

“Tom is a hugely admired and influential actor who understands the full breadth of film culture. He moves fluidly from starring in the world’s most successful blockbusters to remaining engaged with – and loyal to – emerging British filmmakers where he is admiringly bold and risk-taking in his choices. This potent combination demonstrates Tom’s innate understanding that greatness in film rests upon deep cultural foundations – something that Britain is exporting to the world. Tom will be an enormous boost to the BFI and I want to thank him for taking on this extremely important role on behalf of British film.” - BFI CEO Amanda Nevill

Later that day, Tom Hiddleston attended and was a guest speaker at the inaugural BFI Luminous Gala. The BFI Luminous Gala raised over £430,000 to support the BFI National Archive. The theme of the event was #FilmIsFragile.

Tom was asked about his new Ambassador role with the BFI on the red carpet: (1:10) I'm very proud and very privileged. I think the BFI's an amazing institution. I think it does so much work behind the scenes in nurturing British talent, in celebrating and supporting British filmmakers. And I'll do everything I can to expand the work, to talk about their work. They're the real heroes in the end and I wouldn't be here without them.

You can see a portion of Tom Hiddleston's speech launching the Film Is Fragile campaign starting at 2:05.
